23 January 2012: The Iranian Ministry of Energy Transboundary Water Researches Centre hosted a workshop with participation of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on “Transboundary Waters, Challenges and the Way Forward.”

The workshop focused on ways in which the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) can help Iran strengthen transboundary water cooperation with fellow basin States. The workshop brought together 50 participants from Iran, other regional governments and members of the UN system.

The workshop emphasized several issues, including implementation of existing transboundary water agreements and the negotiation of others. Participants stressed the need for: building capacity in international water law and transboundary water management; promoting scientific and sound information for joint management and dispute resolution; considering virtual water; increasing water efficiency; and using unconventional water resources.
