The Millennium Development Goals Africa Steering Group met for the first time on 20 September 2007 at UN headquarters in New York, US, gathering leading officials from, among others, the African Union, African Development Bank, European Union, International Monetary Fund, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, UN Development Programme, and the World Bank.

The Africa Steering Group was launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 14 September 2007 to help boost development in Africa, following reports that sub-Saharan Africa is off track to meet any of the Millennium Development Goals. The objective of the meeting was: to identify effective mechanisms to implement commitments in the areas of health, education, infrastructure, agriculture and food security; to improve aid predictability; and to strengthen joint efforts at the country level. The members of the Group intend to meet at least twice a year and to work in the “most results-oriented manner possible.”
