7 March 2011: The Women’s Major Group has prepared a position paper for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio 2012) outlining a gender perspective on the green economy.

The position paper, titled “Green Economy – Inclusive and Equitable,” argues that economic development must occur within the limits of nature and promote social equity by ensuring a fair distribution of resources among all countries and social groups, as well as between men and women. It calls for policies to manage natural resources with an emphasis on human rights, gender equality and environmental justice, and for an economy that provides “green” livelihoods, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for women as well as men.

The paper includes chapters on, inter alia: women in the informal sector; social security, family planning and childcare; technology and training to engage women in a green economy; healthy jobs; and water and sanitation for women’s economic development.

Women’s Major Group activities are led by the Women’s Steering Committee and coordinated by the two organizing partners Voices of African Mothers and Women in Europe for a Common Future. [Publication: Position Paper: Green Economy – Inclusive and Equitable]
