WMO/GWP APFM Newsletter Reports on 6th World Water Forum

The September 2012 edition of the newsletter released by the Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM), a joint programme of the WMO and GWP, highlights APFM activities on integrated flood management, and reports on activities related to flooding in urban areas, conservation of floodplains and managing flash floods.

September 2012: The September edition of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)/ Global Water Partnership (GWP) Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM) newsletter features articles on: APFM’s participation at the 6th World Water Forum, held in March 2012, in Marseille, France; the outcomes of a workshop held in Laos to develop a national strategy on integrated flood management (IFM); and the APFM Advisory Committee and Management Committee Meetings.

The newsletter notes that, during the 6th World Water Forum, the APFM presented on a case study on community based flood management in India. It highlights outcomes of the workshop in Laos, including: introducing IFM and integrated water resources management (IWRM) approaches; analyzing current institutions, decision markers, plans and policies, and developing consensus on the IFM approach; and developing an IFM framework to support existing policies to support early implementation.

The newsletter also describes new and revised publications in the “Tool Series,” designed for use by practitioners. These publications include: Conservation and Restoration of Rivers and Flood Plains; Urban Flood Management in a Changing Climate; Management of Flash Floods; the 2nd edition of Reservoir Operations and Managed Flows; and Flood Proofing.
