apfmOctober 2014: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Global Water Partnership (GWP) discussed mainstreaming Integrated Flood Management (IFM) in their programmes and country strategies, at talks in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Geneva meetings, held 8-9 September 2014, brought together partners of the Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM), a joint WMO-GWP initiative. The APFM’s management and advisory committees discussed approaches to be taken during its four-year 2014-2018 phase, agreeing to seek additional funding to maintain the APFM’s HelpDesk function.

The APFM’s HelpDesk, based at the WMO, provides technical advice, facilitates workshops, develops flood management tools and e-learning packages, and supports countries and river basin organizations in the formulation of flood management proposals.

APFM promotes the concept of Integrated Flood Management (IFM) as an approach to coping and living with floods. The APFM is supported by the Governments of Italy, Germany, Japan, Switzerland and the US. [APFM Newsletter 34: October 2014 article on APFM Meetings] [WMO Fact Sheet on APFM] [APFM Website]
