15 June 2013: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) organized the First Technical Workshop on Support to Risk Assessment, where representatives from countries and organizations, as well as experts, met to explore needs for hazard information to conduct risk assessment and analysis. Participants discussed recommendations that could contribute to enhance preparedness for disasters.
The First Technical Workshop on Standards for Hazard Monitoring, Databases, Metadata and Analysis Techniques to Support Risk Assessment took place from 10-14 June 2013, in Geneva, Switzerland. Among other issues, the workshop discussed the mandates and activities of the WMO’s Technical Commissions and Programmes for development of guidelines for monitoring, detection and development of hazard analysis to support risk assessment.
Participants also heard presentations on national experiences to support risk assessments made by representatives from China, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, the Russian Federation, Switzerland, the UK, the US, Canada and Australia. Finally, they worked on drafting recommendations for, inter alia: prioritizing hazards and related cascading hazards; developing deliverables and timelines regarding hazard definition, guidelines, databases and mapping; and needs for strengthening intra- and inter-commission mechanisms.
