13 July 2009: During the Conference on Intellectual Property and Public Policy Issues held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 13-14 July 2009, and organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), participants discussed the role of intellectual property (IP) in promoting the development and diffusion of green technologies to combat climate change.
Michel Jarraud, Secretary General the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), stated that IP should be a catalyst and not an obstacle to finding solutions to tackle climate change. He stressed the need for a multi-disciplinary approach to the challenges arising from climate change, as well as the importance of facilitating technology transfer.
Francis Gurry, WIPO Director General, underscored the role IP rights can play in facilitating the transition to clean technologies and renewable energies by offering the necessary incentives to develop green technologies. [Conference website] [WIPO press release]
