The recipients of the award, according to Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), are linked by “a clear thread – climate change.”

Winners come from across the globe and have worked within and outside government, as well as on policy, advocacy and scientific aspects of climate change. He went on to emphasize that the winners of the prize, which rewards individuals who have made a significant contribution to the protection of the Earth’s natural resources, prove that “the greening of the global economy is underway and that a transition to a more resource efficient society not only makes environmental sense but social and economic sense too.”
