Winners Announced in Rio+20 Essay Competition

In the competition titled “Dear Mr.

UN Secretary-General …,” children submitted essays outlining what governments and world leaders should do to build a more sustainable future.

It was organized by the Living Rainforest, an education programme of the Trust for Sustainable Living in the UK.

23 May 2012: The winners of the “Dear Mr. UN Secretary-General …” International Schools Essay Competition have been announced. The competition asked children to outline what governments and world leaders should do to build a more sustainable future, in the lead-up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

The competition was organized by the Living Rainforest, an education programme of the Trust for Sustainable Living in the UK, and was aimed at primary and secondary school students and their teachers.

The first, second and third place winners are, respectively: for the primary schools category, Popova Marina from the Russian Federation, Nourhan Meddah from the UK, and Kehkashan Basu from the United Arab Emirates (UAE); and for the secondary schools category, Nardos Tilahun from New Zealand, Theo Toaldo from the UK, and Ksenia Bashlykova from Kazakhstan. Nardos Tilahun also won the grand prize, a trip to attend Rio+20. [Competition Winner Announcement]
