WHO15 February 2012: The World Health Organization (WHO) held a regional meeting to assist Western Pacific countries in their efforts to eliminate leprosy and strengthen their capacity to control the disease.

The meeting brought together national leprosy control managers from countries of the Western Pacific region that are not yet meeting the WHO leprosy elimination target of less than one case per 10,000 of population, namely the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati and the Marshall Islands, or that continue to have high numbers of new cases in remaining leprosy hotspots.

Participants were introduced to the WHO Enhanced Global Leprosy Control Strategy and received the latest epidemiological data on leprosy to assist their efforts in eradicating the disease.

The meeting was held from 13-15 February 2012, at the WHO Regional Office in Manila, the Philippines. [WHO Press Release] [UN Press Release] [Publication: WHO Enhanced Global Strategy for Further Reducing the Disease Burden Due to Leprosy]
