WHOFebruary 2014: The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Office for Europe, together with the WHO Collaborating Centre (Cardiff), released ‘Health-sector involvement in chemicals management at the national level: review of current practice,’ a resource on the Strategy for Strengthening the Engagement of the Health Sector in the Implementation of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).

The 26-page report features case study examples of health-sector involvement in chemicals management in Australia, Slovenia, Russian Federation and US, among others.

It concludes that, in order for health-sector input into national chemicals management to be effective, action must be taken in six key areas: awareness raising; risk assessment; capacity building and resilience; information collection and dissemination; intersectoral communication and collaboration and effective working; and international leadership and coordination.
