22 January 2009: The High-level Meeting on Transport, Health and Environment, organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe and the UN Economic Commission for Europe, and hosted by the Government of the Netherlands, is being held from 22-23 January 2009, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Participants, including government officials, NGO representatives and other stakeholders, will review the implementation of the Transportation, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme. In addition to exploring the role transportation can play in contending with environmental, health and economic challenges, the meeting is specifically focused on means to reduce transportation-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Nata Menabde, Deputy Regional Director, WHO Regional Office for Europe, noted WHO’s call upon participants to enhance transportation systems in an effort to strengthen energy efficiency measures and mitigate GHG emissions.
