18 December 2009: The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a fact file titled “10 Facts on Children’s Environmental Health,” which summarizes environment-related causes and conditions of the nearly three million deaths of children under five years old every year. The Fact File underscores, among other things, that climate change increases the risk of disease especially for children in developing countries. It is noted that children face risks of injuries and death from floods and extreme temperatures, asthma and respiratory diseases that increase in frequency with air pollution, and diarrheal diseases, malaria, and malnutrition related to climate change.
