WFP Works to Reduce Emissions from Transportation
story highlights

The WFP training programme, which aims to increase fuel efficiency and safety, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and costs, includes a "Train the Trainers" course.

28 January 2011: The World Food Programme (WFP) has initiated a training programme for its drivers that aims to increase fuel efficiency and safety, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and costs.

The WFP estimates that improved driving and maintenance can result in 10% savings in fuel and related emissions. This represents significant savings considering that the WFP used more than 12.3 million liters of fuel in 2009. All training participants receive a Drivers Handbook, including a “green” section, developed by the Climate Neutral team, which aims to help drivers reduce emissions at work and at home. To date the programme has trained 563 drivers in 13 countries and includes a “Train the Trainers” course. The course is expected to be expanded to an additional 18 countries during 2011.
