21 September 2009: Vulnerable Group Development is a joint programme between the World Food Programme (WFP), the Government of Bangladesh and local NGOs, which provides monthly rations of flour and “life-skills” training to vulnerable women primarily in disaster-prone areas.
Training includes initiatives to help populations adapt to climate change by raising homesteads and building embankments to protect travel routes. WFP has announced that the programme covers approximately 750,000 rural women and is currently at risk due to funding shortfalls. [WFP news release]
