story highlights

The WFP, FAO and President of Haiti underscored that sustainable development is not possible unless hunger and malnutrition are addressed.

Their partnership will seek to: extend Haiti's national school meals programme to more mothers and children, expand it with more locally produred food, combat malnutrition, and assist farmers' access to markets.

22 June 2012: Haiti’s President Michel Martelly has announced a partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) to expand the country’s national school meals programme, combat malnutrition and assist farmers’ access to markets. Announcing the partnership at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), representatives stressed that sustainable development is not possible if hunger and malnutrition are present.

The WFP will extend its nutrition programmes for an additional 500,000 mothers and children, as well as expand the school meals programme with more locally procured food. [WFP Press Release]
