Water Risk Data for Mekong River Basin Released
story highlights

The World Resources Institute's (WRI) "Mekong River Basin Study,” provides 14 indicators of water risk in the basin, including data on total water withdrawal, seasonal variability, occurrence of flood and drought, threatened species, and extent of public awareness.

December 2012: The World Resources Institute (WRI) has released indicators of water availability in the Mekong River Basin, based on its review of publicly available data and creation of original datasets for estimating water availability and use at the sub-basin level in six countries: China, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Viet Nam.

The document, titled “Mekong River Basin Study,” was compiled and developed as one of a number of base studies contributing to WRI’s global Aqueduct Water Risk Framework. The authors use data on water withdrawals reported in the Mekong River Commission’s 2010 “State of the Basin report” for the Lower Mekong Basin countries.

The information is presented in a series of maps, with citations directing users to the source data. Fourteen indicators of water risk are covered in the study, including data on total water withdrawal, seasonal variability, occurrence of flood and drought, threatened species, and extent of public awareness.
