The Vanuatu government has signed a US $4 million financing deal with the Pacific Environment Community (PEC) Fund for a solar-powered saltwater desalination project to service eastern Ambae Island and Aniwa Island.

PIFS2 August 2013: The Vanuatu Government has signed a US$4 million financing deal with the Pacific Environment Community (PEC) Fund for a solar-powered saltwater desalination project to service eastern Ambae Island and Aniwa Island.

The project is billed as an adaptation measure to the impacts of climate change on the islands. It will provide safe water to 10,850 people as well as to a health care center. The project will be carried out be the Energy Department of the Government of Vanuatu.

The PEC Fund is financed by the Government of Japan to assist Forum Island Countries (FICs) in addressing environmental issues. It was developed as part of the Hokkaido Declaration of May 2009. [PFIS Press Release][PEC Fund]
