10 May 2011: During the third round of the US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, held from 9-10 May 2011, the two sides discussed bilateral, regional and global issues, including cooperation on climate change, energy and fisheries.

The US and China agreed to: continue to enhance capacity building in greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory; further promote cooperation on electric power; share information about regulatory experiences on energy; enhance cooperation and analysis of the planning and deployment of large-scale wind projects research, and connecting wind projects to the electric transmission grid; continue in-depth discussions on cooperation on shale gas; continue exploring possibilities for cooperation on biofuels, subject to availability of funding, with priority consideration being given to the active promotion of research and cooperative projects of non-grain raw material systems for second generation biofuels; and strengthen joint research to develop accurate and reliable capabilities for observing and understanding the behavior of GHGs in the atmosphere.

On fisheries, the two sides agreed to: collaborate in assisting regional fisheries management organizations and other international organizations, in which the US and China are both parties, to meet their mandates to reduce illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and opportunities for IUU fish and fish products to enter global markets; conserve and manage marine living resources, collect data specific to species of particular concern, and ensure their sustainable management and conservation to prevent illegal or unintended take of sea turtles and other protected marine species in accordance with treaty obligations, national laws, and regulations; and formulate a US-China 2011-2015 framework plan for ocean and fishery cooperation and further develop a US-China large-scale multidisciplinary joint program for the Indian and Southern Oceans in the near future.
