UNWTO and China Open Sustainable Tourism Observatory

China's third Sustainable Tourism Observatory will monitor the environmental and socio-economic impacts of tourism.

The Observatory is part of the Global Observatory on Sustainable Tourism initiative established by UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to support sustainable tourism policies.

19 July 2011: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and China have opened a third Sustainable Tourism Observatory in China to monitor the environmental and socio-economic impacts of tourism.The Zhangjiajie Observatory will gather and report data about the impacts of tourism, based on the UNWTO’s sustainable tourism indicators. It is part of the Global Observatory on Sustainable Tourism initiative established by UNWTO to support sustainable tourism policies. The Observatory is located at the entrance to Zhangjiajie National Park, in the Hunan province, which is China’s first national park and a UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site that receives as many as 40,000 tourist visitors each day during its high season.
