UNU, University of Pisa Launch PhD Programme on ICT for Sustainable Development

The UN University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST) and the University of Pisa, Italy, launched a joint degree PhD programme in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for sustainable development, with a cohort of seven students from five countries.

The program will train experts in sustainable development on addressing challenges using current and future ICT.

17 October 2012: The UN University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST), based in Macao, China, and the University of Pisa, Italy, have opened a joint degree PhD programme in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for sustainable development. The program aims to train the experts who will become future global leaders in the ICT field on sustainable development issues, and on how to address such challenges using current and future ICT.

The first cohort of seven students from five countries began the program in September 2012, which will take place in Macao. First semester classes include: Climate Change, Energy and Sustainable Development; Environment and Development; Sustainability Modeling; and Seminars in ICT for Sustainable Development. Students will spend the second semester in Pisa and then carry out doctoral research.

The PhD students, who were selected from approximately 300 applicants, will receive diplomas in ICT from both UNU and the University of Pisa. [UNU Press Release]
