January 2013: The UN Task Team for the Post-2015 Development Agenda (UNTT), along with nine UN agencies, has released a new thematic think piece, titled “Science, technology, and innovation for sustainable development in the global partnership for development beyond 2015.”

The paper considers the integration of science, technology, and innovation (STI) into the post-2015 development agenda, and a need for capacity development in these areas for broader public engagement.

Stating that technological learning is “a cross-cutting issue for inclusive development,” the paper emphasizes the need for capabilities for participation in both local and the international community. It says STI is a driver of prosperity in growth in all countries, and that balanced intellectual property rights (IPR) frameworks are necessary for full development. Finally, the paper recommends that science and technology serve as a relevant dimension of every goal within the post-2015 development agenda.

Contributors to the piece include: the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

This paper is one of nine new Think Pieces published by the UNTT’s working group on the global partnership for development beyond 2015. The papers will be synthesized in a report to be published in March 2013.
