UNSG Launches Public Tool to Track Progress on MDGs, Rio+20 Commitments
story highlights

The Integrated Implementation Framework (IIF) is a publicly accessible, online platform, aiming to serve as a springboard for discussions on the post-2015 development agenda.

Ban said the IIF also will help to monitor commitments made by countries at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), and invited delegates to use rely on it during deliberations at the upcoming Development Cooperation Forum (DCF) of ECOSOC.

June 2012: A new tool to track support for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was launched in an informal meeting of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). The online platform, titled “Tracking Support for the MDGs: Integrated Implementation Framework (IIF)” is publicly accessible and aims to track progress on the financial and policy commitments made by countries towards realizing the MDGs.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon proposed the initiative as a follow-up to the High-Level Plenary Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in 2010 and the UNGA mandate to report on progress in the implementation of the MDGs. The MDG Gap Task Force, which is chaired by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and composed of agencies from the UN system and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), designed and constructed the IIF website in collaboration with Knowledge Management Service of the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT).

In the informal meeting of the UNGA on 6 June 2012, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, Ban briefed Member States on the launch of the IIF. The tool will: provide an overview of all international commitments made in direct support of the MDGs since 2000; provide searchable information of the progress on commitments; provide information on the nature of these commitments; track their delivery; demonstrate inconsistencies; identify gaps between the support provided and the support that is required for achieving the MDGs. It aims to serve as a springboard for discussions on the post-2015 development agenda. Ban said the IIF also will help to monitor commitments made by countries at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

He invited delegates to use the IIF for reference during deliberations at the upcoming Development Cooperation Forum (DCF), part of the 2012 Substantive Session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Also speaking to the informal meeting, Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro said the IIF’s potential could only be realized if all stakeholders make effective use of it, and said the blog and social media links on the platform would help keep it updated.
