18 July 2016: The UN Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) unveiled a draft version of its flagship report on social policy innovations towards implementation of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, inviting comments through an online consultation process. The report addresses: understanding transformative change; trends and innovations in social policy; care policies; social and solidarity economy; climate change; mobilizing domestic resources; and governance and politics.

The preview version of the report, titled ‘Policy Innovations for Transformative Change,’ was launched at a side event during the 2016 session of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York, US, on 18 July 2016. A three-week comment period is open from 18 July-7 August 2016. Feedback will be compiled and posted on the UNRISD website, and it will used to inform the final version of the report, UNRISD announces.

In a press release, UNRISD notes that it seeks to provide a “benchmark” for implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The report identifies social policies that are likely to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including ways to foster policy coherence as well as democratic and participatory processes and institutions. The report contains examples of innovations in social policy from around the world, including many countries in the global South.

UNRISD flagship reports are published at roughly five-year intervals. Previous editions have addressed poverty and inequality (2010), gender equality (2005), government responsibility for social development (2000) and the social effects of globalization (1995).
