29 April 2009: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) held a training workshop on environmental negotiations and climate change diplomacy in New York, US, from 29-30 April 2009. The workshop was organized as part of UNITAR’s 2009 Negotiation Training Series, and was targeted mainly at delegates from developing countries, least developed countries and small island States (SIDS).

The aim of the workshop was to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to enable them to participate effectively and efficiently in multilateral negotiations on environmental sustainability and climate change. The workshop included teaching sessions, providing participants with an overview of the characteristics of environmental agreements and the basic principles of negotiating, as well as specific simulation exercises on climate change and international forestry negotiations.
