Unitar20 November 2014: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Government of Gabon have signed two agreements aimed at strengthening multilateral diplomacy and building the capacity of Gabonese diplomats and Ministerial officials. As outlined in the agreements, UNITAR’s Multilateral Diplomacy Programme will continue training the country’s diplomats in a range of fields, including climate change, through 2015.

In addition, as specified by the agreements’ cooperative framework, UNITAR will support the Government of Gabon as it establishes a new Diplomatic Academy in the capital. Gabonese Deputy Foreign Minister Dieudonné Nzengue and UNITAR Executive Director Sally Fegan-Wyles signed the agreements during a climate change negotiations workshop organized by UNITAR in Libreville, Gabon from 27-31 October 2014.

The two-part workshop brought together 35 Gabonese officials. The first part of the workshop taught participants about the structure and process of the UNFCCC and its ongoing negotiations. The second part provided an opportunity for officials to try out negotiating techniques through a series of simulation exercises. [UNITAR Press Release]
