Participants from the Asia-Pacific region shared their experiences with climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) at a workshop organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in Jeju, the Republic of Korea.
16 October 2013: Participants from the Asia-Pacific region shared their experiences with climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) at a workshop organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in Jeju, the Republic of Korea.
The workshop, which took place from 16-18 October, included lectures, small group discussions and site visits to Korean research centers. Lectures focused on: climate change, rainfall and typhoon trends over the past 10 years; Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) regional training activities; and Korea’s National Climate Change Adaptation Plan. Participants discussed international DRR frameworks, including the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA); the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction’s (UNISDR) Making Cities Resilient Campaign; and the Post-2015 Framework for DRR.
Participants also shared and discussed the results of a local government self-assessment tool that they used to identify three areas in which they hope to demonstrate achievements in adaptation and DRR, within the framework of UNITAR’s city-to-city knowledge sharing “CityShare” methodology. CityShare provides users with a common language for sharing adaptation experiences, facilitating networking opportunities and encouraging city-to-city collaboration.
