Governor of Acre State, Tião Viana, hosted Acre Day, which celebrated the launch of the Acre and Madeira Rivers basin state policy and highlighted the region's advanced sustainable development policies as an example to be emulated.
The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) participated in the launch.
20 June 2012: Tião Viana, Governor of Acre State, Brazil, hosted Acre Day at the Botanical Garden in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), to officially launch the state policy for the Acre and Madeira Rivers basin. The policy already has resulted in the planting of more than 200,000 trees and the provision of water resources for more than 2,300 people in the region, according to the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).
The Acre and Madeira Rivers are located near the borders of Bolivia and Peru.
UNITAR Executive Director Carlos Lopes drew attention to Acre’s advanced sustainable development policies as a good example for other regions. WWF-Brazil announced a new partnership between Acre State and the Forestry Department of Saba, Malaysia on forest management.
