2 February 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has released a briefing note titled “Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation Through Effective Disaster Risk Reduction,” which incorporates evidence that illustrates how climate risks are constructed and which risks can be reduced cost effectively.
Key messages of the 10-page briefing note include that: increasing disaster risk is primarily due to development processes; and disaster risk reduction (DRR) and adaptation have the most leverage when placed at the centre of national development planning.
The publication builds on UN/ISDR’s two previous briefing notes on climate change and DRR, and is informed by the initial findings of the 2011 Global Assessment Report on DRR, the outcome of an online discussion of the Hyogo Framework for Action Mid-Term Review, and the body of research being assessed in the forthcoming Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report – Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation.
