UNIDO Supports Eco-Town Development in Viet Nam

Under its Green Industry Initiative, the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) launched a project to support the first "eco-town" in Viet Nam.

The project will encourage environmentally responsible private investments, improved delivery of energy and environmental services, and other benefits.

UNIDO1 September 2011: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) launched a project implementing green industry practices in small and medium enterprises in Viet Nam, particularly within the tourism and crafts sectors. Through support for the Hoi An Peoples’ Committee, the project will implement an an action plan based on the “eco-town” model, with the intention of making Hoi An the first eco-town in Viet Nam. UNIDO’s Green Industry initiative strives to help economies become more sustainable, through green public investments and public policy initiatives that encourage environmentally responsible private investments.

The Hoi An project will work alongside business and government agencies to promote green practices within the city. It will also aim to raise incomes and employment opportunities, especially for women, through business and community development, and seek improved delivery of energy and environmental services.

The project is part of Policy Advice on Environmental Management: Green Industry Development, funded by UNIDO and the UN One Plan Fund. [UNIDO News]
