July 2008: The first environmentally-friendly hydro and solar power-generating
center has been inaugurated by the UN Industrial Development Organization
(UNIDO) in a rural community in Kenya.

Under
the project, which is part of the UN’s “Lighting Up Kenya” programme, the
center in Kibai village in Kenya’s Kerugoya division will generate
“zero-emissions” electricity or electricity generated without producing
greenhouse gas emissions. The center will also promote the use of LED lamps to
replace kerosene lamps that contribute to respiratory illnesses in children and
women who use them on a daily basis. [UN
