UNIDO Hosts “Life without Lights” Exhibition
story highlights

The 14th UNIDO General Conference hosted an exhibition by photographer Peter DiCampo, titled "Life without Lights," which examined the causes and effects of energy poverty and workable solutions.

UNIDO21 December 2011: During the fourteenth UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) General Conference, which met from 28 November-2 December 2011, an exhibition by photographer Peter DiCampo, titled “Life without Lights,” was held.

The exhibition included photographs from Ghana, Iraqi Kurdistan and a single photograph from the Ivory Coast, as a contribution to the current dialogue on global energy poverty. The project asks and aims to answer three questions: “What solutions will be made available for the energy poor?;” “Will they be sustainable?;” and “What does that mean for the rest of us?”

The project came about as a response to DiCampo’s time living and volunteering in Northern Ghana, where DiCampo experienced how deeply the lack of electricity access affects communities and households. The project examines the causes and effects of energy poverty as well as workable solutions. Through this, he highlights the many consequences of being “energy poor,” such as ill-health, lack of sufficient education and gender inequality.
