UNIDO Director-General to Receive Global Leadership Award

The Award is presented annually by the UN Foundation and the UN Association of the USA to leaders from a variety of sectors for their global leadership and support for the UN.

UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Director-General Kandeh Yumkella will be honored for his work on sustainable energy, poverty reduction, climate change and the Millennium Development Goals.

3 May 2012: Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), will be presented with the Global Leadership Award for his work addressing various global issues, including sustainable energy, poverty reduction, climate change and the advancement of the Millennium Development Goals.

The Global Leadership Award is presented annually by the UN Foundation and the UN Association of the USA to leaders from a variety of sectors for their global leadership and support for the UN. The selected leaders will be honored during the Global Leadership Dinner to be held on 16 October 2012 in New York, US.

Commenting on the honor, Yumkella said the award is in appreciation of UNIDO’s work in general. He highlighted the organization’s work on industry and the environment, including assisting countries to tackle poverty through productive activities. Yumkella also noted that the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) will bring environmental sustainability together with social and economic development.
