UNIDO, ACP Promote Sustainable Industrial Development, Poverty Alleviation

UNIDO and the ACP Secretariat have committed to a collaboration to assist ACP countries in the development of policies, institutions and capacities to eradicate poverty through the development of industrial activities.

24 March 2011: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) have committed to a joint effort to promote sustainable industrial development in ACP countries with the purpose of poverty alleviation.

UNIDO Director-General Kandeh K. Yumkella and ACP Secretary-General Mohamed Ibn Chambas signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the joint commitment on 24 March 2011, in Brussels, Belgium, during a session of the Committee of ACP Ambassadors.

The collaboration aims to assist ACP countries develop policies, institutions and capacities to eradicate poverty through industrial activities. Anticipated activities under the collaboration include: development of entrepreneurship, including in rural areas with a focus on youth and women’s entrepreneurship; development of small businesses, agro-industries and trade capacity building; assistance in technology transfer; promotion of renewable energy; and assistance in implementing international environmental agreements.
