July 2008: Nine young people representing the participants in the “Junior 8” (J8)
Summit, held in Chitose City, Hokkaido, Japan, from 2-9 July 2008, presented
their proposals for global development to the leaders of the Group of Eight Industrialized
Countries (G8), in an initiative led by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Their
proposals, which focused on the topics of climate change, poverty and
development, and global health, included recommendations to establish an
international organization to evaluate products based on ‘green indexes’ such
as energy efficiency, waste management, packaging and product composition, and
for the G8 leaders to sign a declaration prohibiting the provision of aid that
is motivated toward political gain rather than the common good. The 2008 summit
marks the fourth Junior 8 summit held in parallel to the G8 summit of world
leaders. [UN
