8 January 2009: In an address to the UN Security Council, António Guterres, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), warned of new forms of displacement, with natural disasters on the rise due to climate change.

He stressed the interrelationship between conflict, climate change and extreme deprivation, explaining that they can strengthen each other as a cause of displacement.
