UNHCR Supplies Solar Lamps to Refugee Students

23 February 2012: The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is providing targeted assistance to support young refugees in Uganda to succeed in schools, including by providing refugee students with rechargeable solar lamps to increase their study time.

It is estimated that are nearly 160,000 refugees and asylum-seekers in Uganda. More than half of them are from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with smaller numbers from Somalia, Sudan, Rwanda and other countries in the region. The UNHCR programme has also raised salaries for teachers and supported the construction of numerous new school buildings. [UNHCR Press Release]
