UNFF10 Honors Forest Heroes, Filmmakers and Photographers

The tenth session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF10) has honored the winners of the Forest Heroes Award, as well as winners of the International Forest Short Film Festival and the International Forest Photograph competition.

9 April 2013: The tenth session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF10) has honored the winners of the Forest Heroes Award, as well as winners of the International Forest Short Film Festival and the International Forest Photograph competition.

The Forest Heroes Award recognizes the contributions of everyday people who implement innovative and inspirational approaches to forest management. Those honored at UNFF10 include: Rose Mukankomeje of Rwanda for supporting forest regeneration; Hayrettin Karaca of Turkey, founder of an environmental NGO; Preecha Siri of Thailand for establishing a village model for ecosystem management; Almir Narayamoga Surui of Brazil for establishing a 50-year plan for forest management; and Ariel Lugo of Puerto Rico for establishing a youth reforestation programme.

The film festival was organized in collaboration with the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival on the theme ‘Forests for People.’ The winning films were produced by: Rowan Pybus of South Africa; Paul Rosolie of the US; Elio Alonso Vasquez Miranda of Peru; Sébastien Pins of Belgium; and Dan Childs and Nick Werber of the UK.

The photo competition captured images of individual’s relationships to forests. Winners are: Atakan Baykal of Turkey; Eka Fendiaspara of Indonesia; Riccardo Gangale of Italy; Olga Lavrushko of Ukraine; Prasetyo Nurramdhan of Indonesia; and Pablo Pro of Spain.
