The Secretariat of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) submitted a reference document to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), on behalf of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), on sustainable forest management (SFM).

The document provides background information on already agreed language at the multilateral level regarding SFM. The language, from the Non-Legally Binding Instrument on All Types of Forests (forest instrument), describes SFM and the actions to be taken by member States to achieve the purpose of the forest instrument.
In other UNFF news, informal consultations on means of implementation took place at UN Headquarters in New York on 4 September 2009. A draft negotiating text has been circulated to member States by the co-facilitators of the consultations, UNFF 7 Chair Hans Hoogeveen (the Netherlands) and UNFF 8 Chair Boen Purnama (Indonesia). The informal consultations, based on the draft text, will continue in New York on 15-16 September 2009.
