The Country-Led Initiative (CLI) in support of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) met from 17-20 November 2009, in Guilin, China, focusing on forests for people and the role of national forest programmes (NFPs) and the Non-Legally Binding Instruments on All Types of Forests (NLBI).

Participants gathered to share experiences and lessons learned in the use of NFPs to achieve sustainable forest management (SFM) and as a means to implement the NLBI. During plenary, participants heard presentations on: forests for people in the context of the NLBI, NFPs and the UNFF; global and regional activities to promote forests for people contributing to the implementation of NFPs and the NLBI; and NFPs as a tool to facilitate stakeholder participation in promoting forests for people and implementing the NLBI. Delegates also heard country experiences and lessons learned in implementing NFPs and the NLBI to improve livelihoods and eradicate poverty. Throughout the meeting, participants also convened in working group sessions on: policy, legal and institutional frameworks; sustainable production of goods and services; national arrangements to mobilize finance; and capacity building and participatory approaches. A Co-Chairs’ summary report, listing conclusions and recommendations of the meeting, was prepared and will be submitted for consideration by the UNFF at its ninth session in 2011.
