17 April 2009: The management of forests in a changing environment will be discussed during the next two weeks at the eighth session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF8), which will open at UN Headquarters in New York, US, on 20 April 2009.

The main topics to be addressed at UNFF8 are: forests in a changing environment, including forests and climate change, reversing the loss of forest cover and degradation, and forests and biodiversity conservation; and means of implementation. Delegates are expected to adopt one of the three proposed options for financing sustainable forest management: a dedicated fund; a facilitative mechanism; or a combination of the two. Jan McAlpine, Director, UNFF Secretariat, stressed the need to take action and called on member States to “step forward and finally reach agreement on the ways and means to finance sustainable forest management.” [IISD RS coverage of UNFF8] [UN press release]
