UNFCCC Workshop Considers Options and Ways for Increasing Ambition

COP 17 in Durban decided to hold an in-session workshop on oncreasing the level of ambition at the first negotiating session in 2012.

This workshop took place on 21 May 2012, during the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP), in Bonn, Germany.

During the workshop, participants heard presentations by UNEP, IPCC, IEA, AOSIS, Australia, Marshall Islands, New Zealand, Japan, China, Brazil, the EU, the US, and the LDCs.

21 May 2012: The Workshop on increasing the level of ambition under paragraph 8 of decision 1/CP.17 aimed to consider options and ways for increasing ambition and possible further actions to bridge the gap between the sum of current pledges to curb emissions and what is required by 2020 to limit global average temperature increase to 2ºC.

At its 17th session, the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC decided to hold an in-session workshop on increasing the level of ambition at the first negotiating session in 2012. This workshop took place on 21 May 2012, during the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP), in Bonn, Germany.

The workshop discussed the ways and means to enhance mitigation ambition; explore what action can be taken, including by the COP, to realize the mitigation potential of the options proposed during the workshop; and to identify what further activities can be undertaken under the workplan on enhancing mitigation ambition.

During the workshop, participants heard presentations by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); the International Energy Agency (IEA); the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS); Australia; Marshall Islands; New Zealand; Japan; China; Brazil; the EU; the US; and the least developed countries (LDCs).
