27 October 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a synthesis report on approaches to and experiences in integrating and expanding adaptation planning and action, and lessons learned, good practices, gaps, needs and barriers and constraints to adaptation (FCCC/SBSTA/2009/6).

The information is derived from submissions from parties and relevant organizations and includes action across levels and sectors together with information on related activities within and outside the UNFCCC process. It also contains relevant information from outputs of mandated Nairobi work programme activities under the work area of adaptation planning and practices in the first phase, which include: submissions by parties and relevant organizations and an associated synthesis report. This report will be considered by the 31st session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 31).
A submission from Sweden on behalf of the European Community on possible further action on the implementation of Article 4, paragraph 8, of the Convention and decisions 5/CP.7 and 1/CP.10 (actions and activities addressing the adverse effects of climate change) (FCCC/SBI/2009/MISC.11/Rev.1) has also been published. The submission acknowledges that, while significant work has been undertaken on adaptation and in particular to implement the Convention Articles and relevant decisions, a lot remains to be done to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience in developing countries. The EU suggests that further efforts should be made in the following areas: financial resources; vulnerability and adaptation assessments; adaptation planning and implementation; data, systematic monitoring and observation; regional collaboration and cross cutting issues; risk management and risk reduction; and capacity building, education training and public awareness.
