27 October 2009: The October 2009 issue of the UN Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) Newsletter provides updates on the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA) and progress on Mitigation, Adaptation, Finance and Technology, along with reports on related activities since the Bangkok meeting.

The newsletter includes, inter alia: a focus on the latest progress in technology needs assessment; a section on the release of the latest greenhouse gas emissions data reported by 40 industrialized countries in 2009; and summaries of three new publications related to the least developed countries and the development of a climate finance platform by the UNFCCC Secretariat. The newsletter highlights that the Adaptation Fund Board is on track to start approving projects and programmes by the end of the year and provide financial resources to support adaptation activities. The newsletter also includes key statements from Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, to the International Energy Agency (IEA) Governing Board and to the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS) Summit on Climate Change. In a video, the guest columnist, Saleemul Huq, International Institute for Environment and Development, London, talks about the state of play on adaptation, particularly adaptation funding, and highlights four key elements in the discussion: how much money is needed; where the money will come from; how the money will be channeled; and how the money will be used.
