8 May 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the report on the workshop on common metrics to calculate the carbon dioxide equivalence of greenhouse gases (GHG) (FCCC/SBSTA/2012/INF.2).

The report contains information about the proceedings of, and discussions held during, the workshop on common metrics to calculate the carbon dioxide equivalence of GHG, which was held on 3-4 April 2012 in Bonn, Germany. At the workshop, participants from Parties and the scientific community shared information and their views on four topics: uncertainties; new and refined areas or metrics; policy goals; and the relationship between policy frameworks and metrics. In addition, representatives of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group I and Working Group III provided information on the status of the work on metrics that the IPCC is developing under the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC (AR5).

The information contained in the report is expected to serve as a basis for continued consideration of common metrics under the methodological issues under the Convention by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) at its 36th session, to be held in Bonn, Germany, from 14-25 May 2012.
