14 March 2013: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the report of the individual review of Malta’s 2012 inventory submission (FCCC/ARR/2012/MLT).

The review finds that between 1990 and 2010, Malta’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increased by 49.1%, emissions from the industrial processes sector and the waste sector increased by 1,167.2% and 200%, respectively, but emissions from the solvent and other product use sector and agriculture sector decreased by 48.1% and 11.6%, respectively.

The centralized review took place from 10-15 September 2012 in Bonn, Germany, by an expert review team (ERT). The ERT concludes that the inventory submitted by Malta is complete in terms of years and geographical coverage and that it has significantly improved compared to the 2011 submission, but that it is incomplete in terms of categories, due to a lack of or insufficient activity data. It further concluded that the inventory is generally in line with the Revised 1996 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines, the IPCC good practice guidance and the IPCC good practice guidance for LULUCF, except for the categories for which estimates are missing or the categories that have not been transparently reported, such as information on methane recovery and certain elements of the report on the waste sector.
