3 April 2013: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the report of the centralized review of the 2012 annual submission of Italy (FCCC/ARR/2012/ITA) which indicates that total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions decreased for this country by 3.5% between 1990 and 2010.

The Expert Review Team (ERT) that conducted the centralized review finds that Italy’s inventory submission was prepared in compliance with the UNFCCC reporting guidelines. It concludes that the inventory submission, the common reporting format (CRF) tables and the national inventory report (NIR) are complete. The ERT further states that Italia’s inventory is in line with the relevant IPCC Guidelines.

The ERT identifies the following issues for improvement, namely enhancing the transparency in the energy sector regarding the reporting of fugitive emissions and in the industrial processes sector regarding the trends impacting emissions, as well as the transparency of the reporting for the land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector. The ERT further formulates recommendations for improving methodological approaches in estimating emissions for specific sectors, including for the waste, LULUCF, energy and industrial processes sectors.
