26 April 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the report of the centralized review of the 2011 annual submission of Canada (FCCC/ARR/2011/CAN), which shows that total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increased by 17% between 1990 and 2009, with the energy sector accounting for about 82% of total GHG emissions.

The Expert Review Team (ERT) that conducted the centralized review concluded that Canada’s inventory submission is complete and was prepared and reported in accordance with the UNFCCC reporting guidelines. However, it identified areas where the consistency, completeness and transparency of the reporting could be improved. It also identified the following cross-cutting issues for improvement: inclusion of land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) in the trend uncertainty analysis; revision of the elements of the national system that would enable the timely submission of Canada’s annual inventory; and improvement of transparency in the energy, industrial processes and waste sectors, and LULUCF activities.
