UNFCCC Outlines Cooperative Activities Contributing to its Work

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat has published a summary of cooperative activities with UN entities, other convention secretariats and intergovernmental organizations that enhance and contribute to work under the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol (FCCC/SBSTA/2014/INF.8).

UNFCCC30 April 2014: The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat has published a summary of cooperative activities with UN entities, other convention secretariats and intergovernmental organizations that enhance and contribute to work under the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol (FCCC/SBSTA/2014/INF.8).

The key objective of such activities is to support Convention and Protocol implementation and the UNFCCC process, as well as parties to the Convention, in an efficient and effective manner. The publication includes information on relevant activities in which the secretariat has been involved since the 38th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).

The document discusses activities in cooperation with UN Headquarters, specifically those initiated by the UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) and the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Change Support Team. The document identifies the following specific areas of cooperation: technology, including through the Technology Mechanism and technology needs assessments; finance, including through the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Standing Committee on Finance (SCF), the extended work programme on long-term finance, the Adaptation Fund and the Global Environment Facility (GEF); capacity building, such as through the framework for capacity building in developing countries, the Durban Platform on capacity building, the UN Alliance on Climate Change Education, Training and Public Awareness, and the One UN Training Service Platform on Climate Change; adaptation, through the Least Developed Countries Group (LEG), national adaptation plans (NAPs), and the Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change (NWP); and mitigation, including through nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs), cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), collaboration with the International Energy Agency (IEA), and contribution to the UN wide data portal.

Other areas of cooperation include: climate knowledge (science, research and systematic observation); gender; the Joint Liaison Group (JLG) of the Rio Conventions; the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda; the UN Global Compact; and communications.
