story highlights

Addressing the Carbon Expo 2011 roundtable titled "From carbon finance to climate finance - Are we getting there?" Christiana Figueres highlighted that a higher level of mitigation could be achieved through the blending of carbon finance and climate finance.

1 June 2011: In her keynote address to the Carbon Expo 2011 roundtable titled “From carbon finance to climate finance – Are we getting there?” in Barcelona, Spain, Christiana Figueres, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, discussed carbon and climate finance, and the relationship between the two.

On carbon finance, she observed that the international negotiations have repeatedly led to statements of principles that the current market mechanisms should continue. Figueres said the question is how the mechanisms might be refined, whether new mechanisms should be developed to complement existing ones, and whether these new market mechanisms could be combined with other financial instruments as a new avenue for mobilizing finances at scale.

On climate finance, she highlighted the first meeting of the transitional committee in April for the design of the Green Climate Fund. On the relationship between carbon and climate finance, Figueres noted that a higher level of mitigation could be achieved through the blending of financial instruments.
